PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
A very special thank you to those of you who have renewed your
membership for
2018. An extra special thanks to over half of the renewing members
who sent
additional money for various needs at the Shrine. Your generosity
is most appreciated.
On a less upbeat note, membership is down by about 100. If you are
still thinking
about a renewal, please send your check now by using the
registration form in this
newsletter.
Little Flower had a
major water main break that damaged the Brendan Avenue side of
the church. Those repairs are being effected and hopefully will be
completed by the
time you read this. Fortunately our insurance policy covered the
majority of the costs.
Thank you for your
continued support of Little Flower. Without you and a dedicated
Alumni Committee we could not function.
Any comments,
questions, or suggestions, please contact me at 410-933-3666 or
hsinn2@comcast.net.
Bob Campbell, Class
of 1953.
ANNUAL RAFFLE
Enclosed in this newsletter you will find tickets for the annual
raffle. First prize is
$1,000, second prize is $500, and third prize is $250. Suggested

MAINTENANCE REPORT |
As
many alumni and parishioners recall the first two Sundays in January
were brutally
cold and record setting. It was Catastrophic to our heating system
as the Circulating
pumps and oil congealed preventing us to fire boilers. As a result,
pipes in upper
Church and lower chapel froze and ruptured. 6
radiators also cracked and caused flooding. Flooding cause paint and
water damage that has been slow in getting
repaired. The good news is the piping and 6 radiators have been
replaced and
repaired. The painting contractor will start Mon July 16th
to scrape and repaint lower
Chapel back wall and the 2 Vestibules on Brenden and Kentucky Ave.
Work should be
completed in one week. We have requested bids to repair water damage
to floors and
should have finalized in near future.
Also, a separate concern we have quotes to repair leaks around the
stain glass
windows on Kentucky Ave side main aisle.
The main altar will soon have a new glow about it. We are
converting to LED bulbs
which offer energy savings, and safety to our maintenance staff (no
longer having to
climb ladders to change bulbs.)

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Thanks to everyone
who has already sent in their dues for 2018, and a special thanks
to many of you who contributed additional money to Little Flower.
It is most
appreciated and will be put to good use
.
For those who have not sent in dues, invoices will be mailed in
mid-March. If you
receive an invoice and have already paid or are a life time member,
we apologize.
Just let us know and we will make the necessary correction.
The pew memorial
dedications have been one of our best fund raisers ever. To date
approximately 60% of the pews are accounted for. One approach has
not been taken
and that is a class memorial. Special offer. If a class makes a
dedication with a total
amount of $500, we will also put an appropriate name plate on the
memorial plaque in
the rear of the church in addition to the ones on the pews
themselves. If you want
more information, please contact Bob Campbell for details.
As always, thank
you for your support of Little Flower. Encourage your siblings and
classmates to join the alumni association.
Regards,
Bob Campbell, Class of 1953. 410-933-3666

LITTLE FLOWER FACTS
Shrine Pastors – Past to Present: Who Were They and When Did They
Serve? Part 2.
In the previous
issue of the Alumni Newsletter the first two of five pastors who
served
the Shrine were presented. They were Father Thomas J. Wheeler
(7/9/1926 –
4/9/1942) and Monsignor George J. Larkin (5/29/1942 – 5/29/1967).
Due to Monsignor
Larkin’s poor health Assistant Pastor Frederick H. Dugan was named
Administrator of
the Parish and held that position until February, 1969, when shortly
after Father
Joseph D. Fuller was appointed the third pastor of the Shrine.
(Page 3)
|
Father Fuller was
appointed pastor on March 1, 1969. He set about the creation of an
elected Parish Council and began much needed repairs to the parish
buildings and
grounds. His sudden death on May 9, 1969, was a shock to the parish.
Cardinal Shehan
appointed Fr. John V. Ballard as the fourth pastor of the Shrine on
June 14, 1969. Father Ballard was invested as a Domestic Prelate
with the title of
Monsignor on October 18, 1970. He retired in early 1992 after
serving as pastor of the
Shrine for 23 years.
Fr. Michael J.
Orchik was appointed by Archbishop William Keeler as the fifth
pastor of
the Little Flower in March, 1992. Father Mike’s first assignment
after ordination in
1973 was as associate pastor at St. Patrick’s in Fells Point and
later he served as
associate pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Graceland Park. Since
1997, Father Mike
has been the only full-time priest on staff. He has served our
parish for over 26 years
making him the longest tenured pastor of the Shrine of the Little
Flower. Thank you
Father Mike for your continuous service not only to the Shrine, but,
also to the
community.
The above
information was obtained from "A Story of the Parish 1926 - 1951",
published to celebrate the Shrine's 25th Anniversary, “Golden
Jubilee – The Shrineof
the Little Flower 1926 – 1976” and "Shrine of the Little Flower
School 75th Anniversary
Grand Reunion").

wishing to contribute to the LITTLE FLOWER FACTS or provide stories
relating to your years at the Little Flower can email them to Jim

BULL ROAST REPORT
Once
again, on behalf of the members of the Board of the Shrine
of the Little Flower
Alumni Association, thank you very much for
your participation in this year’s Bull and
Oyster Roast. A special thanks to everyone who donated
baked goods to the Cake
Wheel and all those who supported the Raffle. Your generous
response to our request
for non-perishable food items for the Food Pantry was
greatly appreciated, especially
considering the upcoming holidays, when the need is always
greater.
Planning for next year’s roast has started. Please note the
date of October 9, 2016
second Sunday) as the date of the roast!
It was apparent that having the Ravens’ game in the Lounge
was a success and so,
if the Ravens do not have a bye on October 9, 2016, we will
have the game on in the
Lounge!
Charles H. Snyder (’53)
The winners of the 2015 Raffle were:
$1,000.00, Daniel Swegon, Fallston, MD, SLF

CLASS REUNIONS
If this is a
Reunion year for your class, we urge you to consider holding
your reunion at
the Bull Roast. There are several ways the Alumni
Association can assist you. A
representative from the class can obtain the information of
your classmates from our
database. If you supply us the date, time, location, etc.
it will be published in the
newsletter. Contact us at:
littlefloweralumn@comcast.net
Please consider attending Mass at the Shrine
as a group, as part of your Reunion.
The Class of 1966 will celebrate their 50th
graduation anniversary from SLF. One way
to celebrate would be to attend the October 9, 2016 Alumni
Bullroast at Columbus
Gardens, Belair Road. Cost will be $45 per person. More
details will follow during
the next year.
Contact Nancy Cirincione at

FIFTH SUNDAY MASSES- 2016

SPECIAL MASS ON JANUARY 31, 2016

parents of our patron, St. Theresa of Lisiuex. Please join
us at the 11:00 A.M. Mass to celebrate this event.
Light
refreshments will be served after Mass.
LITTLE FLOWER FACTS:
DID YOU KNOW?
The history of the Shrine of the Little Flower as a parish
begins in 1926 the era of
Peace....Prosperity....Picnics....and Prohibition. Calvin
Coolidge was president of the
United States, Albert Ritchie was governor of Maryland,
Howard Jackson was mayor of
Baltimore and the Shrine of the Little Flower came into
being.
As early as 1921 there were requests for a new church in
northeast Baltimore. As a
result, in 1923, Archbishop Michael Curley agreed to
purchase a piece of property for
the establishment of a new parish in an area bounded by what
is now Belair Road,
Kentucky, Cardenas and Brendan Avenues.
(Page
2)
In the spring of 1926 Archbishop Curley appointed Father
Thomas Wheeler as the
founding pastor of what was to become the Shrine of the
Little Flower. Archbishop
Curley originally wanted to name the new parish in honor of
St. Brendan; however,
Father Wheeler requested that the newly canonized St.
Therese of Lisiuex be honored
instead. Brendan Avenue was named in the honor of St.
Brendan.
It was not
until July 6, 1926 that twenty-five men came together at the
home of Mike
Horan to meet the new pastor for the first time. They met
weekly until October 13 with
one of their major tasks was to perform a census of the
area. Their census report was
presented on August 3 showing 463 families including 997
adults and 455 children.
On August 29, 1926, a contract was let for the construction
of the first church building
at a cost of $8,604.00.
The church
rose quickly and the first mass was celebrated on Sunday,
October 24,
1926 with a total attendance of 1,075 for the four Masses
celebrated that day. The
church was a simple wooden chapel at the corner of Belair
Road and Brendan Avenue.
The center aisle was flanked by rows of attached wooden
chairs - six to a side. Plain
glass globes acted as ceiling fixtures that supplemented the
natural light from rows of
plain glass windows that lined the side walls. Between the
paired windows were
simply framed pictures of the Stations of the Cross.
Thus the beginning of the Shrine of the Little Flower.
(Most of the above is from "A Story of the Parish 1926 -
1951", published to celebrate
the Shrine's 25th anniversary and "Shrine of the Little
Flower School 75th Anniversary
Grand Reunion").

LITTLE FLOWER ALUMNI
____________________________________________________________ |
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Over six hundred people attended the 11:00 A.M. Mass on
August 9th, to welcome
Archbishop Lori to our parish. The support of the Alumni Association
allowed the
parish to host a well-attended reception after a very special Mass.
Many of us were
fortunate to speak briefly with the Archbishop. A special thanks to
Bob Campbell and
his wife Helen for all their hard work in coordinating this event.
A
special thanks also to Board Member, Tim Pugh for arranging the
participation of
The Irishman’s Chorale. Their music added a special note to the
Mass.
There
were many alumni present, but there were a few special attendees we
would like
to acknowledge:
Evelyn
Kane Kraft, class of 1935. She was one of the graduates of the
first full eight
year class.
Bernadette Frey Hergenhahn, class of 1942. She was baptized 87
years ago, in 1928,
at Little Flower.
Brianna Brown, class of 2004. She is the youngest grad to
attend the mass. The
school closed in 2005.
A
special thanks also to Dan Bentzen, for coordinating the use of the
school hall for our
reception, and for assisting with the handicap lift.

BULL
ROAST
Question:
Have you been pondering where you
can go on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015
for good fellowship and companionship, have a full, all-you-can eat
buffet and open bar
while, at the same time, either listening to a great DJ play the
music you like and/or
watching the Ravens completely dominate the Cleveland Browns on big
screen TVs?
Not to mention the possibility you might win a gorgeous potted mum
or even $250,
$500 or $1,000 on Raffle payouts or more on the 50/50s?
Well,
there is only one correct answer to that question…………

We can
offset that by offering a full table price of $400.00 for a table of
10. However,
this works ONLY if there is ONE person at the table
responsible for all 10 tickets….that
is, if one person pays the $400.00. We cannot offer the $400.00
price if each person
at the table is responsible for his/her own ticket(s).
After
October 1, we will try to accommodate requests for tickets and for
specific seating, however, we
may not be able to guarantee either, so please try to place your
order for tickets as early as possible.
We are sorry
but there are no tickets sold at the door.
Attending the Roast? We would greatly appreciate your donations.
The food
pantry needs whatever non-expired dry or canned goods you would care
to donate
(cash donations are also greatly appreciated). And, without your
donations of cakes
and other baked goods, the Plant and Cake Wheel will be just the
Plant Wheel. Thank
you in advance for your generosity.

MAINTENANCE
REPORT
For the first time in
several years, Little Flower was able to address many concerns
that had been put on the back burner due to the cost factors. The
following projects
have been completed within the last two months:
Complete restoration of the murals over the three altars. This is
the first time that this
had been done in many years. It was very costly, but absolutely
necessary or the
murals would have deteriorated beyond repair. The results are
outstanding. Please
visit the church to see for yourself.
Exterior concrete work that included pointing up the steps and
patching various areas.
Repairs to broken stained glass windows.
Cleaning of the upholstery on the chairs in the sanctuary, and the
altar rail kneeling
pads.
Restaining of the church doors and the main door of the rectory.
Replaced carpet in a rectory meeting room.
Window joint caulking of the exterior of the stained glass windows.
Replaced caulking on all of the interior of the stained glass
windows.
Painting of all exterior railings of the church and rectory.
Plastering and painting of various areas of the church and rectory.
Repairs to various water damaged areas of the church and rectory.
Miscellaneous items including rental of lifts to access upper areas.

2013
Bullroast Report
On behalf of the members of the Board of the Shrine of the
Little Flower Alumni Association, thank you very much for your participation in this year’s Bull and Oyster
Roast.
The Roast was a definite success! We surpassed previous Roasts in
attendance and, as a result, in money raised in support of the Shrine.
There were 344 attendees at this year’s roast, some 93 more than
last year. Two of the reasons for that increase may have been a result of the three classes holding
reunions at the roast, and also the change in venue from the Eastwind to Columbus Gardens.
Planning for next year’s roast has started and we are working with
Columbus Gardens to make it even better than this year’s, and you can play a very significant
part in seeing that happens. I would ask that if you have comments, negative or positive regarding the
2013 roast to send them to me via email at: snyder.charles@ymail.com.
Your response could go a long way in helping us determine why the Roast was so well attended this year as well as indicating
what we might have done better. Please include your name (along with maiden name if appropriate) and
class year. For those of you who are not Shrine grads please include your school and class year.
Last, please use the word “ROAST” as the title. This will help me weed out any spam.
Naturally, should you wish to remain anonymous you may certainly do so.
Again, thank you very much and be assured that the money raised will
be put to very, very good use, supporting the Shrine of the Little Flower Parish! For the Board I offer our prayers and best wishes.
